DIANA ROSS “The Point!” (1977)
DIANA ROSS
The Point: Everybody’s Got ‘Em, Me And My Arrow, Life Line, Everybody’s Got ‘Em (Reprise) (7:51)
Written By Harry Nilsson
From An Evening With Diana Ross, 1977
Diana Ross took an ambitious stab at an abbreviated live version of The Point!, recorded September, 1976, for the album, An Evening With Diana Ross. The former Supreme, on the advice of her daughter, performs an outline of the entire story, including some narration and character voices, leaving out numerous sections to whittle the basic plot and medley down to about 8 minutes. It’s slightly odd, to be honest, and rather stagey - which may well describe all of Ross’s live shows (for all I know). While the performance isn’t very satisfying, give Ross (or maybe her daughter) some credit for reviving Harry’s fable in 1976, before the rash of stage shows that would later honor the piece. Big thanks to David for donating this live version of The Point, and for providing the artwork. The 1992 CD reissue is out of print and going for close to $100 @ Amazon.
